The official festivity of Diwali begins with Dhanteras (Dhanvantari Triodas) . It is the first day of five days festive of Diwali.This year Dhanteras falls on 25th October 2019.
People of India this day as auspicious and Shubh . They celebrate this day as birth of Shri Dhanvantari,as the physician of the gods. He was also one of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
On this auspicious day people purchase precious things like gold, silver, vehicles and utensils. . In some parts of our country , like Gujarat and Maharashtra this day is celebrated even more important than the actual Deepawali day, and people hold Lakshmi, Kuber (the Hindu God of riches) and Ganesha Pooja on this day.
2. Naraka Chaturdashi
The day after Dhanteras and before Diwali is called Naraka Chaturdashi or Kali Diwali or Chhoti Diwali or Roop Chaturdashi .This year it falls on 26th October 2019.
According to the Hindu scriptures on this day lord Krishna killed the demon king Narakasura and freed 16000 princesses from his prison.
As next day is Diwali ,streets and houses start twinkling with colourful lights .On this day people get up early in the morning and take holy bath. After this people go to each other’s homes to wish ‘a Happy and Prosperous Diwali’ and also exchange gifts and sweets.
3. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja)
The main day Diwali falls on the third day . This year Diwali falls on 27th October 2019.
This is known is Lakshmi Puja. People perform worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha in the evening. . People believe that goddess Lakshmi enters their homes and blesses devotees with good fortune and wealth on this day.
After puja people light diyas and candles in the every corner of their homes, and the streets. Then they visit temples and their neighbours. They exchange sweets and gifts.At night fireworks and crackers shoot continuously in the houses and streets.
4. Govardhan Puja (Annakut)
We celebrate the fourth day of Diwali as Govardhan Puja. It is also known as Bali Padwa or Anaakoot. This year it falls on 28th October 2019.
According to Vishnu Puraan Krishna Defeated Indra(God of rain) by lifting the Govardhan mountain on his finger.People make a small mount by cow dung and worship it .
In Gujarat ,Maharashtra , Tamilnadu and Karnataka this day is celebrated as Balipratipada or Bali Padwa. People celebrate this festival with zeal and enthusiasm.
5. Bhai Dooj ( Day of love between siblings)
Bhai Dooj is the last day of five day long festival . This year Bhai Duj falls on 29th October 2019.
For the Hindus this Bhai Duj is equivalent to the Rakshabandhan. Sisters put Tilak on the forehead of brothers and do aarti.Brother give gifts to sisters. Brothers promise to protect sisters while sisters pray for brother’s long life .
After eleven days of Diwali Hindu celebrates Devotthan Ekadasi which also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi, on the eleventh day of half of the Hindu month of Kartik. On this day people arrenge marriage ceremony of holy plant Tulsi . This is also starting of Hindu wedding season.
